Root 70 @ Klapsmühl Mannheim 180313

If I had to name a handful of bands that enrich German jazz with an independent and over the years consistent voice, then Root 70 would be there. But: it’s an international band – two members originally came from New Zealand, two from Germany, but one is now in Zurich and the other one in New York. The leader of the band, trombonist Nils Wogram lives in Zurich and teaches Jazz Studies at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm currently lives in Sarajevo, but for many years he was part of the lively jazz scene in Cologne. The bassist of Root 70, Matt Penman, who also comes from New Zealand, is mainly living and working in North American, as well as drummer Jochen Rückert. Originally from Cologne, he left the country in the mid-1990s, heading for New York. „4 dudes getting dirty with odd-meters and micro-tones“ – so it says on Penman’s website (even with a cute photo from the band’s early days) – and so it is. A bit more jazz for the head than for the belly, played with virtuosity by these four exceptional musicians – a pleasure for the listeners at the Klapsmühl Mannheim. The concert was organised by IG Jazz Rhein-Neckar.
